March 15 Paul Harmon Crossing BordersI came across a few images I took last year at a Paul Harmon show at Zeitgeist Gallery. Paul's been in Nashville quite a while and I have been working in an office space which owns and displays several of his pieces, so I live with his art everyday. This show was be far the most vibrant so far. Art could be seen from the street; through the large plate glass windows so clearly. I enjoy paintings that can be read from such a distance.
Bold stencil lines have long been a leitmotif of the Paul Harmon work. Delineated borders define the contours and characteristics of the people, places and things that inhabit the artist’s life and imagination. Cloisonné-like vibrant color and grayscale tones alike are seemingly trapped inside the stenciled bold lines. The effect is that symbols are made of his subjects. The woman is not necessarily only a particular woman but a graphic symbol for all women. An interior or landscape may be a specific one but it also symbolizes all such ambiance's and environments.
